Project

The project intends to offer a tool for the study of ancient Greek diplomacy in the Hellenistic and Roman periods. It consists of two main sections, to which a search function is associated. Its primary purpose is the creation of a comprehensive prosopography, along with a digital database, of all Greek envoys in the period between the mid-fourth century BC and the end of the 1st BC.

The first section (Envoys) collects the names of all individuals who accomplished a diplomatic mission, whatever purpose it had (political, military, financial, religious, institutional etc.), in the selected time span. The choice of a comprehensive prosopography stems from an overall understanding of ancient Greek diplomacy, which builds on two main assumptions: first, that being envoy was no profession; second, that all Greek envoys stemmed from the social stratum of civic élites. Each entry of the catalogue contains all information available on the envoy under discussion, including a list of the diplomatic missions accomplished by him, which receive a close treatment in the commentary.

The second section (Lexicon) focuses on the language and instruments of ancient Greek diplomacy. Each word is analysed according to the contexts where it occurs, also with consideration of its evolution over time.

Furthermore, the site includes a search page with two different multiple search boxes. The first enables one to search by envoy directly, while the second allows a more advanced search inside each mission’s record.
