The Project

The project intends to offer a tool for the study of ancient Greek diplomacy in the Hellenistic and Roman periods. It consists of two main sections, to which a search function is associated. Its primary purpose is the creation of a comprehensive prosopography, along with a digital database, of all Greek envoys in the period between the mid-fourth century BC and the end of the 1st BC.

Map

This map shows all known diplomatic connections between places in the ancient Mediterranean between the 4th and 1st centuries BC. The blue lines represent the ideal connection between places (blue pins) and not the actual movement of the envoys, because in most cases the sources do not allow a precise reconstruction of the routes. By clicking on a pin, a window will show all diplomatic connections for that location, both incoming and outgoing.
