Herophilos son of Athenaios, together with Neandros son of Neandros, was a man sent by Teos to probably as a theoros (I.Samothrace Theoroi 10, 31). No mention of eponyous officials is preserved on this stone. Even if his role as theoros is not made explicit in the part of the test that we can read today, the similarity with other texts about theoroi in the epigraphic corpus of Samothrace is compelling.

Herophilos and Neandros were not the only ones to perform their sacred mission in Samothrace that same year: alongside them, theoroi from Colophon, Cyme, Priene, and from the association of technitai of Ionia and Hellespont were commemorated.

The chronology of I.Samothrace 10 col. 3 depends mainly on palaeography. N. Dimitrova thinks that this block may be the continuation of I.Samothrace 1 and be dated to the 2nd c. BC for its similarity to the lettering of I.Samothrace 26. Actually, many letters show dissimilar shapes from those of I.Samothrace 26: see sigmas with perfectly parallel horizontal strokes, symmetrical pis, absence of smaller circular letters, etc. A bit later chronology seems more satisfying (Aneziri 2003, 395). If the close proximity between the only Prienese theoros and those from the technitai on the stone depended on the fact that they came together from the same place, i.e. Priene, the chronology could be narrowed down to the time around the battle of Actium, when Marc Antony assigned Priene to the technitai as their seat (Plut. Ant. 57, 1), a situation clearly not destined to endure. See about this Le Guen 2001 II, 34.

Both Herophilos and Athenaios are quite common names in Teos, but no connection can be established between this envoy and other people.
